The problem with 24-bit
colours is that is uses a great deal of video
memory and processing power. Some manufacturers are of the
opinion that it is so
demanding that it can really only be
property supported on the MCA
or EISA bus. Fortunately it is only
needed for applications such us full
process colours DTP or
illustration.
There are many
different types of intelligent graphics adapters, but most are based on either IMB ’s 8514/A design or TIGA from
Taxes instruments. There are
also a great many graphics “accelerator” which, while they fail short of being
intelligent graphics cards , have hardware to specifically speed up
particular operations common in GUI operating systems
such as Windows. Indeed, these cards are so specific
that they are often called
Windows accelerators. The best known
Windows accelerators. The best
known Windows accelerator is IBM’s
XGA.
